BWV 872/1: Prelude 3 in C# major
(c) Yo Tomita, 1997
Early Version (ca. 1738)
This version is known through the copy (P 226) made by Anna Magdalena
in 1738/39, but the piece itself could have been originated from Bach's
years in Cöthen.
This version is written in C major, and the first half of the piece
is written in bare harmonic outline in minims (Cf. BWV 846/1) .
London Autograph (1739/40)
Based on the intermediate version, Bach presumably transposed the piece
to C# major on this score, while working out the texture .
Final Version (1744)
Autograph is lost, but this version is reflected in the copy made by
J. C. Altnickol in 1744. Here Bach changed the tenor line in the first
half (bb.1-24) and made a minor revision in the 2nd half. .
