Early Version (ca.1738)
Bach's autograph is lost, but the piece is known through the copy (P
595) made by J. F. Agricola, who began his study with Bach on that
year. This early version is written in D major. It uses stricter thematic
writing in bb.30 and 45-54 .
Final Version (1739)
Presumably based on the early draft in D major, Bach transposed the
piece to Eb major, while improving the details. .
There are no significant differences between two manuscript traditions.
