Heinrich Biber: regionalisms and performance

This paper is intended to contribute to what I hope will be a body of work celebrating the tercentenery of the death of the Bohemian composer and musician Heinrich Biber.

Heinrich Biber is rightly remembered as one of the finest violinists of his generation.  Yet there is still a great deal of confusion surrounding his surviving output.  Nikolaus Harnoncourt seems to be largely responsible for making Biber a modern commerical success, but many recordings and performances fail to consider some of the regionalisms of his music which might change the way they are performed and thus the way they are recieved.  This paper focuses on two regional aspects of some of Biberís output.  The first area is that of the composerís use of existing material (quotations of folk songs and the like).  The second area concerns regional  performance practices and examines some of the performance possibilities of Biberís early works in particular.
