9th Biennial Conference on Baroque Music

Urban nobility and Italian opera in early 18th-century Madrid

Juan José Carreras and José Máximo Leza

Recent opera studies about Italian opera in 18th century Spain have focused mainly on the court and city theatres of Madrid. In spite of its fragmentary documentation it is possible to show how opera and serenata performances in the houses of the nobility were fundamental to understand the reception of Italian opera. The present paper gives a first approach to this issue during the reigns of Felipe V (1700-1746) and Fernando VI (1746-1759).
