Handel and the Spanish cantata
Handel's Spanish cantata "No se enmendara jamas" is one of the most enigmatic works from the composer's Italian journey. Several hypothesis have been proposed until now to explain the origin of this cantata, but no one has explored the implications for this work of the Spanish cantata as an established genre in the early 18th century. The Italian background of ms 1.14 of the Mackworth collection in Cardiff which contains 18 Spanish cantatas and the possible attribution of one of its cantatas to Handel will be proposed as a new context for our understanding of the Italian reception of this genre and the implications of it for cantata HWV 140.
