The School of Music and Sonic Arts offers two undergraduate pathways:
BMus and BSc Music Technology. Between 70 and 80 new students arrive at
the School in September to commence their three year programme of
study. The School is committed to offering undergraduate learning
opportunities of the highest quality and to provide a rich student experience.
The research-led nature of the teaching in the School opens up
opportunities for students to engage with research that is part of
large collaborative international networks. During an undergraduate
degree in the School, students will be exposed to the highest quality
research, performance and compositional activities with continuous
input from international visitors either in the weekly concert and
seminar series or during the annual Sonorities Festival of
Contemporary Music.
The two undergraduate pathways in the School cover areas such as
Performance, Composition, Musicology and Music Technology and are taught by a
team of 20 full-time members of staff and more than 40 teaching
assistants and instrumental tutors. The University recently invested a
substantial sum in the revision of the Performance programme in the
School and we are now able to offer all students the opportunity to
enrol in either of two first year performance modules which provides tuition for students from both classically trained backgrounds but also for students with interests in areas such as jazz, traditional music, and popular music.
There are numerous performance ensembles in the School, including two
orchestras, big band, improvisation and experimental ensemble, two
choirs, brass band, and an Irish traditional ensemble.
